MUSIC VIDEO + GIG / CONCERT POSTER

In this session, we are looking at film language and genre conventions in the music video form. Music promos are short videos that are made to accompany a song released by a band or solo artist. Music promos are available to view through the artist's own website, hosting websites like VEVO or to purchase from online stores like iTunes.
  • The pop star has an identity or persona which is easily recognizable by the fan
  • Music promos feature performance - the artist sings or plays, making eye contact with us, as the point is to promote the star
  • The lyrics are often reflected in the narrative - the characters and story
  • The band and the song's genre determine the treatment - heavy mettle will be different from rock, pop or hiphop
TASK
  • Watch the three music videos and compare the camerawork and editing
  • Decide whether the music video tells a story
  • How much 'performance' is there?
  • Music videos sometimes use 'intertextuality' - they refer to another 'text' or idea outside the world of the video. Do any of these?
